Welcome to the Free State

Stretching through cities, across grassy plains, over mountain and alongside rivers, the Free State Province of South Africa , has vast expanses of unspoilt countryside, the story of which starts at the beginning of time, with evidence of roaming dinosaurs found in the fossil fields and bushman art recorded in the painting etched into sandstones caves.

Battles were fought, blood was shed. Independence was south and eventually claimed by the settlers in the area, who built the sandstone estates on the Lesotho border. The Free State has had its fair share of political turmoil as both the current ruling Party, the ANC, and the former National Party were formed in Bloemfontein.

Take a walk through time by visiting the national monuments and Bushmen paintings. Visit all sort of museums from fire engines and rugby, to war and toys. Fossil Fields lead the way to ancient sandstone caves where spiritual leader of the times healed the faithful, while the Maluti Mountains extending towards Lesotho ranges high above it all, offering majestic views and wonderful hiking opportunities.

Adrenalins junkies can take a trip down the white water rapids or abseil down Thaba Nchu mountain before taking a 4x4 over the roughest terrain in South Africa. These can all be enjoyed from the lap of luxurious accommodation or roughing in camp sites and backpackers.
